Athletic Training Faculty and Staff
Sports Medicine Staff
David W. Starch, M.D.: Director of Sports Medicine Dr. Starch serves as the Head Team Physician for Texas Lutheran athletics and is very involved in the educational program. Athletic training students interact with Dr. Starch through athletic training room clinics, athlete office visits, saturday morning sports medicine clinics, surgical procedures, and as a guest lecturer in multiple courses. Dr. Starch is licensed by the State of Texas and Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. After receiving his medical degree from Texas Tech University, Dr Starch completed a Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Fellowship where he served as a team physician for the Houston Astros, Rockets, Comets, and the University of Houston.
Brian Stigall, M.D. Dr. Stigall assists Dr. Starch in provision of medical services for Texas Lutheran athletes. He is a family practitioner and sports medicine physician, and is in private practice in New Braunfels. Dr. Stigall also is involved in the athletic training education program through athletic training room clinics, athlete office visits, and as a guest lecturer in various couses. In addition, students serve a clinical rotation in his clinic as a part of their General Medical rotation. Dr. Stigall attended medical school at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio and completed is residency at Scott and White Memorial Hospital and Clinic. He served as a sports medicine fellow at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.
Mike Soulas, MPAS, PA-C Soulas is a physician assistant under Dr. Starch and assists in the delivery of medical services for Texas Lutheran athletes. Mike is involved educationally in athletic training room clinics, athlete office visits, and surgical procedures.
Clinical and Teaching Faculty
Brian Coulombe, MS, ATC, LAT: Director, Athletic Training Education Coulombe has been involved with athletic training education at TLU since 1999 and was highly involved with the initial program accreditation through CAATE. In 2007, Coulombe moved from Head Athletic Trainer to Director of Athletic Training Education. Coulombe is a full time faculty member at the assistant professor level. He received a bachelor of science in athletic training from California State University, Sacramento and a master of science in athletic training from West Virginia University. Coulombe is a member in the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association.
Tim Kent, MS, ATC, LAT, CSCS: Head Athletic Trainer Kent is an alumni of Texas Lutheran and returned as Head Athletic Trainer in 2007. Kent has full time faculty status at the assistant professor lever and teaches a half load each semester. He received a bachelor of arts in Kinesiology from Texas Lutheran University and a master of science in athletic training from West Virginia University. Kent has previous experience in CAATE accredited athletic training education programs and serves as a clinical instructor to athletic training students in the TLU athletic training room. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and has memberships in the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association.
Matt Matocha, MS, ATC, LAT: Assistant Athletic Trainer
Matocha, also an alumni of Texas Lutheran began his position as assistant athletic trainer in 2009. Outside of afternoon athletic training room hours, Matocha is responsable for morning treatment and rehabiliation and teaches two classes within the kinesiology department. He recieved a bachelor of arts in athletic training from Texas Lutheran University and a master of science in athletic training from Indiana State University. Following graduate school Matocha returned to TLU as an intern athletic trainer and then moved onto Concordia University Texas as the head athletic trainer. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association.
Amy Menzies,
LAT: Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer
Menzies obtained her bachelor of science in athletic training from the University of Toledo in Ohio. While at Toledo she spent time with the university's football, tennis, and softball teams. Menzies has also spent time at the highschool level as well as serving in a physical therapy clinic. She is currently working on her master of science in athletic training at Texas State University. Menzies is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Assocation and the Ohio Athletic Trainers Association.

Kinesiolgy Faculty
Jim Newberry, department chair and professor, bachelor of science and master of education, Southwest Texas State University; doctorate, Texas A&M University. Newberry is involved in teaching and applied research in biomechanics, exercise science, and foundations of kinesiolgy.
William G. Squires, professor, bachelor of science and master of education, Southwest Texas State University, doctorate, Texas A&M University and holder of the Frederick C. Elliott Chair in Health, Fitness and Nutrition. Squires serves as the director of the Krost Life Enrichment Program and teaches in the department of biology and kinesiology. He is associated with the NASA space program and is an active researcher in exercise physiology. Squires is also a past president of the Texas chapter of the ACSM.
Casi Helbig, associate professor, bachelor of science, Stephen F. Austin State University; master of education, Southwest Texas State University; doctorate, Texas A&M University. Helbig teaches in the kinesiology department and is an active researcher in motor behavior.
In addition, faculty from the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics teach many courses required in the athletic training curriculum.
