ALPINE, Texas – Sul Ross State quarterback Dominque Carson rushed for 287 yards and four touchdowns in the Lobos’ 35-7 victory over Texas Lutheran.
Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field, the 5-foot-7 Carson darted through the TLU defense and scored on runs of 21, 31, 85 and 46 yards. He carried the ball 22 times and averaged 13 yards a carry.
Carson entered the game as the leading rusher in the American Southwest Conference. He now has 700 yards on 83 carries for average per carry of 8.4. The sophomore from Waxahachie moved his rushing TD total to nine with the four scores Saturday.
Carson’s 31-yard run came in the second quarter with the game tied at 7-7. With TLU driving for the go-ahead score, the Lobos’ Jamal Johnson returned a Jarret Buchholtz interception 60 yards to the TLU 34. Two plays later, Carson scored his second touchdown of the game to put the Lobos ahead 14-7.
The Lobos came out of the halftime break with the 14-7 lead but quickly added to the margin. Carson weaved through the TLU defense for an 85-yard TD at the 13:06 mark of the third. He added his 46-yard scoring run about six minutes later.
Carson flirted with the ASC single-game rushing record of 324 yards (set by Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Jarvis Thrasher against Mississippi College in 2007). Carson had 279 rushing yards by the end of the third quarter.
With his 30 yards passing to go with his 287 yards rushing, Carson played a role in 317 of the 377 total yards gained by Sul Ross.
TLU managed only a second-quarter, 43-yard TD pass from Buchholtz to Steven Thrash. TLU quarterbacks were a combined 8-for-27 with two interceptions and the lone touchdown. Buchholtz, a junior, finished the day 4-for-10 with 66 yards passing. Freshman Rocky Huff was 2-for-15 with 23 yards passing.
The Bulldogs ran 58 plays on Saturday and gained only 168 yards. TLU was 2-for-14 on third down.
