SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran men’s soccer team posted its first victory of the 2009 season with a 2-1 American Southwest Conference win Friday over defending conference champion and ASC preseason favorite University of Texas at Tyler.
At TLU’s Gustafson Field, the Bulldogs quickly took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Pedro Martinez (Canyon Lake/Smithson Valley). The Martinez goal came with less than five minutes elapsed in the match.
TLU struck again in the 65th minute with an unassisted goal from Gumaro Sanchez (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg).
The Bulldogs spent the remaining 25 minutes fending off UT-Tyler attacks. Tony Guillen, the ASC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, pulled the Patriots within a goal with less than five minutes to play. Guillen’s goal was assisted by Edward Anaya.
