Women’s Golf
Junior golfer Carly Hansen (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) was named the American Southwest Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week for her performance at the Schreiner Spring Shootout on Feb. 16-17.
Hansen took third individually at the Schreiner tournament and led the Bulldogs to a fifth-place team finish. Hansen (Coleraine, Minn./Greenway) shot an opening-round 78 and an 82 on the final day.
Hansen and the Bulldogs’ next tournament is the Texas Lutheran Concan Invitational on March 9-10 at the The Club at Concan in Concan, Texas.
Baseball
Texas Lutheran senior outfielder Kyle Harvey (Houston/Houston Christian) is the American Southwest Conference West Division Hitter of the Week. Harvey went 10-for-16 with two home runs, three doubles, a triple and seven RBIs over a four-game stretch. Harvey, who is batting .524 on the season, also stole three bases, walked three times and scored nine runs.
Harvey and the Bulldogs (6-5) host Mississippi College on Friday and Saturday for a three-game series. All the games will be played at TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field. Friday’s game starts at 2 p.m., and Saturday’s doubleheader begins at noon.
All three games will have live stats and live audio webcasts from www.tlu.edu/athletics.
Women’s Track & Field
Texas Lutheran freshmen Devin Evans and Sarah Usry each posted top-five finishes Saturday at the Missouri Southern Invitational indoor track and field meet in Joplin, Mo. The Bulldogs came away with nine season-best marks and one school record.
Evans (Houston/Hightower) placed fifth in the long jump with a leap 16 feet, 3 inches. Evans's mark is a new school record, breaking the old mark of 15-10.25 (set in 2008 by Jessica Raglon).
Usry (Deer Park/Deer Park) placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 9.60 seconds. Usry also competed in the long jump and the triple jump. She placed 11th with a mark of 14-5.25 in the long jump, and she hit a mark of 32-2 to finish sixth in the triple jump. Both marks also were season-bests for Usry.
TLU is scheduled to compete Saturday in its first outdoor meet of the season. TLU will compete at the Trinity University Invitational in San Antonio.
Women’s Basketball
After going winless in 2007-08, the TLU women’s basketball team put together seven wins in 2008-09. Under the direction of first-year head coach Roxanne Long, the Bulldogs posted a 7-18 overall record with a 5-15 mark in the American Southwest Conference.
The seven wins by the Bulldogs exceeded by two the number of wins the program had in the previous three seasons combined.
The Bulldogs set or tied three new school records in 2008-09. Sophomore post Courtney Haskell (San Antonio/Southwest) established a new single-game blocks record with nine against Southwestern Christian (Okla.). Haskell tied the school mark for blocks in a single season, with 49. She shares the record with Freda Williams, who blocked 49 shots in the 1997-98 season.
The Bulldogs also broke the single-season team record for blocks, with 106. The Bulldogs had three blocks in Saturday’s game against Hardin-Simmons to break the single-season mark by one. All three blocks against HSU came from TLU guards – two by Jennifer Munoz (San Antonio/Brackenridge) and one by Jocelyn Langford (Omaha, Neb./San Antonio Clark). Munoz’s block midway through the second half proved to be the record-breaker. The 1997-98 team, led by Freda Williams, held the blocks mark at 105.
Saturday’s game against Hardin-Simmons was the final game of senior Madilyn Caran’s career. Caran (Yorktown/Yorktown) was a four-year letterman and a two-year captain.
Men’s Basketball
The Bulldogs ended the 2008-09 season with a 6-18 overall record. The Bulldogs were 6-15 in the American Southwest Conference. TLU’s six wins were three more than the previous season’s total.
Saturday’s game against Hardin-Simmons was the final collegiate contest for Bulldog seniors Nate Walton (Houston/Westside) and Josh Scott (The Woodlands/The Woodlands). Walton finishes his four-year career at No. 21 on the all-time scoring list at TLU. Walton scored 1,195 points.
Softball
The Bulldogs (1-1) return to action after a 12-day layoff. TLU will host Trinity University on Wednesday at TLU’s Morck Field. Game one of the doubleheader is set for a noon start. TLU will have live stats and a live audio webcasts for both games. The live stats and audio webcasts can be found at www.tlu.edu/athletics.
