The TLU women’s cross country team competed Saturday in Huntsville, Texas at the Sam Houston State Invitational. The race was contested over 5,000 meters.

The Bulldogs finished ninth out of the 11 full teams competing. TLU was the only NCAA Division III team in attendance. All other teams competing at Sam Houston State were members of NCAA Division I.

Freshman runner Samantha Gutierrez (Converse/Judson) led TLU with a time of 21 minutes, 4.32 seconds. She finished in 48th place. Freshman Chelsea Johnson (Katy/Cinco Ranch) crossed the line in 21:22.17 and placed 51st.

Junior Sarah Patterson (Yoakum/Yoakum), junior Hillary Davidson (China Spring/China Spring), and senior Jacqueline Allen (Katy/Mayde Creek) finished in 64th, 69th, and 70th positions. Patterson posted a time of 21:58.52, and Davidson and Allen collected times of 22:30.04 and 22:35.71, respectively.

Sophomore Brook Basey (Buda/Hays) and sophomore Amber Martinez (Odem/Odem) were 74th and 75th, and freshman Sarah Brown (Mission/Mission) and senior Severa Beltran (Forney/Forney) finished in 79th and 87th.

The Bulldogs ran without two of their top runners – junior Tiffany Wetz (Spring Branch/Bracken Christian/Texas-San Antonio) and junior Ravin McCallum (San Antonio/Roosevelt).

The Bulldogs (15-6, 12-4 ASC) can clinch a spot in the ASC Championship Tournament with a win Wednesday over Schreiner (15-10, 9-5 ASC). The Bulldogs face the Mountaineers in Kerrville. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start in Schreiner’s Edington Center.

A win for TLU will give the Bulldogs the season sweep of Schreiner. A TLU victory also sends Schreiner two games behind TLU in the loss column with TLU having just one conference match remaining. A loss would drop the Bulldogs into a tie in the loss column with McMurry and Schreiner.

TLU, McMurry, and Schreiner remain in the fight for the second and third seeds from the ASC West Division. The top three teams from the ASC West Division advance to the ASC Championship Tournament, to be hosted by the ASC East Division champion on Nov. 6-7.

The Bulldogs, the three-time defending ASC West champions, have never placed below second in the ASC West standings since joining the league in 2000.

TLU has seven total ASC West titles (2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008). The Bulldogs shared the 2007 ASC West title, and TLU twice claimed the ASC West runner-up spot (in 2002 and 2005).  TLU also has two overall ASC Championships (in 2004 and 2007) and two NCAA DIII Women’s Volleyball Championship appearances (also in 2004 and 2007) since 2000.

Hardin-Simmons (13-2, 16-5 ASC) currently holds a 1-1/2 game lead over TLU in the ASC West standings. McMurry (14-9, 11-5 ASC) sits just a game behind TLU in the division.

The Bulldogs (0-6, 0-4 ASC) seek to break their winless skid with a home victory Saturday against McMurry University. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Seguin’s Matador Stadium. Seguin radio station KWED 1580 AM will have the radio call (available online at www.seguintoday.com). TLU will have live video (with the KWED audio) at www.tlu.edu/athletics.

TLU comes off a 53-18 loss Saturday in San Antonio to the University of the Incarnate Word. McMurry (3-4, 3-2 ASC) defeated Sul Ross State 35-28. It was the third straight win for McMurry, which had won a combined two games over the last two seasons.

TLU will have live video of the Friday matches from Gustafson Field. Go to www.tlu.edu/athletics to find the links to the web broadcasts.
