SEGUIN, Texas – Monday at Morck Field, the Texas Lutheran softball team closed out the final home doubleheader of 2009 by sweeping a pair of games from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
TLU won 3-0 in the early game and capped the doubleheader with a 9-3 victory.
The win in game one snapped a 14-game losing skid for the Bulldogs. TLU improved to 11-23 overall and to 6-14 in the American Southwest Conference West Division with the two victories.
UMHB dropped to 19-17 overall and to 12-8 in the ASC West. The two losses moved UMHB into a tie with Schreiner for the third and final playoff seed out of the ASC West. Each team has four games remaining on its division schedule.
TLU’s Brigitte Neumann (San Antonio/Incarnate Word H.S.) tossed a six-hit shutout in the first game and moved her pitching mark to 4-10. Neumann struck out one and did not walk a batter. All six hits against her were singles.
Offensively for TLU in game one, Amanda Edwards (San Antonio/Madison) singled home two of TLU’s three runs in the sixth inning. The Bulldogs managed just four hits off UMHB starter Kelsey Greeson (10-9).
In game two, the Bulldogs broke open a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth. Edwards delivered a bases-loaded, three-RBI double in the sixth. Edwards finished the day 3-for-7 with six RBI.
TLU senior catcher Alison Organ (Houston/Westfield), in her final home doubleheader, had a hit and two RBI in the second game.
Bulldog freshman right-hander Kelsi Loewe (Waller/Waller) pitched a complete-game three-hitter. Loewe overcame seven walks in holding the Crusaders to three runs (two earned). Loewe improved to 4-8 with the victory.
TLU concludes its season next Friday and Saturday with four-game road series in Kerrville, Texas against Schreiner. The Friday doubleheader starts at 5 p.m., and Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
