TLU Volleyball hands 4-game defeat to HPU

SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran received 19 kills each from senior Jamie Jahns and junior Jessica Stetler as the Bulldogs defeated Howard Payne in four games Tuesday at TLU’s Tostengard Activity Center.
TLU defeated Howard Payne 25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15.
The Bulldogs improved to 13-5 overall and to 10-3 in the American Southwest Conference West Division. TLU started the night a half-game out of first place in the division.
Howard Payne fell to 7-12 overall and to 5-6 in the ASC West.
Jahns, TLU’s middle blocker from Spring (Klein Collins), collected her 19 kills on 40 attempts. She made just five errors and recorded a hitting percentage of .350. Jahns added two block assists.
Stetler, an outside hitter from San Antonio (Churchill), notched her 19 kills on 55 attempts. She also made only five errors and posted a hitting percentage of .255.
TLU hit .238 as a team and held HPU to .121.
Amanda Curry, the senior setter from Lago Vista (Lago Vista/Hardin-Simmons), dished out 49 assists and added 16 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Chrissy Johnson (Cedar Park/Cedar Park) led the Bulldogs with 19 digs.
Five different Bulldogs registered double-digit digs. Junior libero Blair O’Brien (Austin/Manor) and Stetler each had 15.
Eden Denney led TLU’s blocking efforts. The junior from Converse (Judson/UT-San Antonio) had six (one solo, five block assists).
Sydney Bryant paced HPU with 12 kills. She added 14 digs. Tamika Heline recorded 10 kills and 14 digs. HPU libero Kristin Hammond made a match-best 34 digs.
TLU continues conference play on Friday and Saturday with matches as the second ASC Cross-Division Tournament. At Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas, the Bulldogs will face University of Texas at Tyler (2 p.m.) and University of Texas at Dallas (7 p.m.) on Friday and play LeTourneau on Saturday.
