Blue Bell Creameries CEO and President Paul Kruse will deliver the commencement address at Texas Lutheran University’s Winter Commencement ceremonies at 3 p.m., Dec. 19, in Jackson Auditorium. Baccalaureate services will be held that morning at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence on campus.

Author Barbara Ehrenreich will deliver the keynote lecture Wednesday during Texas Lutheran University’s 30th annual Krost Symposium, "Two Americas – Income Inequality." The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 18 in Jackson Auditorium.

Texas Lutheran University will be hosting a "TLU Sunday" at St. John Lutheran Church, 315 E. Rosewood, in Boerne on Sunday, Nov. 22.

While tickets are still available for the Dec.4-5 performances of Texas Lutheran University’s 2009 Christmas Vesper, no tickets remain for the Sunday, Dec. 6 performance.

Texas Lutheran University Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will present a concert, "Beautiful River," Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Jackson Auditorium. The bands will be conducted by Beth Bronk, assistant professor, TLU School of Music.

The Texas Lutheran University Choirs will perform as part of the Christian Cupboard Concert Series at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, at the Palace Theatre in downtown Seguin.

On Monday, Nov. 9, Texas Lutheran University and Dr. William Russell, Scholar in Residence in the department of theology, philosophy and classical languages at TLU, will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the reunification of Germany. Russell’s lecture and a roundtable discussion, both free and open to the public, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Timmerman Room of Hein Dining Hall on the TLU campus.

Kelleher and president emeritus Colleen Barrett will bring their keen sense of business – and humor – to the 9th annual Texas Lutheran University Excellence in Leadership Dinner on Nov. 17 at the Grand Hyatt in San Antonio.

The program is designed for adults in transition who hold bachelor’s degrees in a field other than education. Participants can match their academic background with one of 20 areas of certification.

Texas Lutheran University’s 30th annual Krost Symposium, which is free and open to the public, will feature presentations and discussion about the issue of working class poverty in the United States.  The symposium, “Two Americas – Income Inequality,” will be held Nov. 18-19 in Jackson Auditorium on the TLU campus.

Texas Lutheran University’s Dramatic Media department presents “The Rimers of Eldritch,” an award winning play by Lanford Wilson, Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 at Jackson Auditorium. Performances will be at 2:30 p.m. on Friday Oct. 30 at Sunday, Nov. 1, and at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday Oct. 31. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors and non-TLU students. Admission is free with a TLU ID.

In his first public address in Texas since taking over as chairman of General Motors, Ed Whitacre will speak on the American automobile industry and the global economy at Texas Lutheran University (TLU) on Tuesday, November 10.

The 2009 Texas Lutheran University Christmas Vespers will be presented Dec. 4-6 at Jackson Auditorium on the TLU campus. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4 and 5; and at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6.

The Texas Lutheran University Visual Arts Department presents an exhibition by Austin artist Virginia Fleck. The exhibit, “Meditation Station: Your Zen Zone,” will be at the Annetta Kraushaar Gallery of the Schuech Fine Arts Center, Oct. 22-Dec. 2. The opening reception will be Thursday, Oct. 22, 3:30-7 p.m. with the artist speaking at 4 p.m.

Author and performer Giselle Stern Hernández will bring her solo show, “The Deportee’s Wife,” to Texas Lutheran University tomorrow, Wednesday, Oct. 21. The 8 p.m. performance in the Chapel of the Abiding Presence is free and open to the public.

Xavier Garza, humorist, canvas artist, and poet, will present the final event of Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in Langner Hall 120. The event is free and open to the public.

There will be something for everyone when Texas Lutheran University presents this year’s opening concert, “Fusion,” at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9 in Jackson Auditorium. "Fusion" will include musical selections that blend many cultures, themes and genres.

Texas Lutheran University will offer the SAT Preparation course starting on Oct. 6, in time for students who will take the Nov. 7 examination. The course includes the mathematics, verbal, and test-taking skills needed for success on the test.

Texas Lutheran University has announced plans to discontinue its Center for Professional Development (CPD) at the end of December 2009.

Bulldog Pup cheerleading clinic, hosted by the Texas Lutheran University cheerleaders, will be held Oct. 24 at Memorial Gym on the TLU campus. The clinic is for anyone in grades K-6.

SEGUIN – The captivating voice of Azul will fill Jackson Auditorium Wednesday night as Texas Lutheran University continues its tradition of excellence during Hispanic Heritage Month. “Azul Presents: Viaje alrededor de Latinomerica,” is free and open to the public, beginning at 7 p.m., Sept. 30 at Jackson Auditorium on the TLU campus.

Texas Lutheran University celebrates Hispanic Heritage month Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 and will host a number of cultural activities and guest speakers on campus, beginning with a Diez y Seis celebration Sept. 16 at Hein Dining Hall from 4:30-7:15 p.m.

With official class rosters complete, Texas Lutheran University reports a full-time enrollment for the 2009 Fall Semester of 1,305, compared to last year’s record enrollment of 1,360 full-time students and 1,307 the year before.

Texas Lutheran University has awarded its 2009 El Premio Salinas to Steffanie Pantoja. This is the 35th year that the scholarship award, which honors the memory of former student Roberto Lee Salinas, has been given. The award honors a student who promotes cultural understanding, places others first, and serves the community in a friendly manner.

Texas Lutheran University will host an exhibit by American contemporary artist Steve Brudniak, Thursday Sept. 3 through Saturday Oct. 3 at the Annetta Kraushaar Gallery of the Schuech Fine Arts Center on the Seguin campus.  Brudniak will be at TLU for the opening reception of his exhibit Sept. 3 from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The reception and exhibit are free and open to the public.

The Texas Lutheran University/Mid-Texas Symphony’s Community Music Academy (CMA) will hold auditions for its Youth Choir on Thursday, Aug. 27.  The choir is for students age 9-16, and a parent should accompany their son or daughter to the audition.

Texas Lutheran University will begin its fall semester with the arrival of the Class of 2013 on Saturday, Aug. 22.  Faculty, staff and students will help the freshmen students move into their residence halls that morning.

Middle school and high school students will play to the tune of music, fun, and instruction as Texas Lutheran University hosts its annual Summer Music Academy, July 12 to July 17.

The Texas Lutheran University School of Music and the Mid-Texas Symphony’s Community Music Academy (CMA) will offer a Vocal Arts Summer Day Camp for third through eighth grade singers at TLU’s Schuech Fine Arts Center, Aug. 10-14. The deadline for registration is Aug. 1.

Beginning June 3, the Department of Education at Texas Lutheran University will be sponsoring Summer Storytime, a weekly storybook reading for local-area preschool and kindergarten-age children and their families.

Do you know what a phlebotomist is? The phlebotomist is a vital member of the clinical laboratory team whose main function is to obtain patients’ blood specimens by venipuncture and micro-collection. The field of phlebotomy has greatly expanded in the past several years, and the role of this integral member of the health care team has recently been brought into much sharper focus. The Center for Professional Development at Texas Lutheran University, in partnership with Condensed Curriculum International, is offering a 90-hour phlebotomy technician program to prepare students for entry level positions in one of the fastest growing health care fields.

Texas Lutheran University is now an official AmeriCorps VISTA program sponsor and, beginning in July, will be overseeing five separate community service projects in Seguin.

Summer pool memberships are now available to the public for Texas Lutheran University’s Mabee Pool.  The pool will open to members May 23 and the season has been extended through Labor Day.

Registration is now underway for summer swim lessons at Texas Lutheran University’s Mabee Pool, with in-person registration available at the TLU Fitness Center Monday through Friday, 8:30-10:30 a.m. and noon-6 p.m.

TLU junior Sara Michelle Strey, age 21, died in a tragic accident Friday night, May 8, 2009.

Elton Bohmann, professor emeritus of business administration, passed away in Seguin, Thursday, May 7, 2009, at age 94.

Fall 2009 will see the founding of the Community Music Academy Youth Choir (CMA), a local endeavor committed to helping young vocalists succeed through the team efforts of choir and to help young singers grow in the areas of healthy vocal production, music reading, confidence in performance, and appreciation of excellent and diverse choral literature.

Texas Lutheran University Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble will be joined by the Seguin High School Wind Ensemble during a performance Friday, April 24, at Jackson Auditorium.  Admission is free and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Composer and pianist Jake Heggie is coming to the Texas Lutheran University campus April 27-29 as artist in residence. While on campus he will present two recitals and conduct a master class, all open to the public.

Registration for summer swimming lessons at Texas Lutheran University Mabee Pool will begin May 12 with in-person registration taking place in the Fitness Center on campus from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Registration will then continue by mail or in person during business hours throughout the summer.

American Red Cross lifeguard training certification classes will be offered at Texas Lutheran University Mabee Pool, April 30 through May 4.

Actress and comedienne Ruby Nelda Perez will present her one-woman show, “Dona Rosita’s Jalapeno Kitchen,” at Texas Lutheran University on Wednesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. The performance, which is free and open to the public, will be in Wupperman Little Theatre in the

Linda Ann Harton Clark, age 65, died suddenly on March 23, 2009 in a highway accident near Seguin. Prof. Clark, who lived in San Antonio, was a faculty member on the library staff at Texas Lutheran University, a position she held for nearly 18 years.  She served both as technical services librarian and as an academic advisor and classroom teacher in the honors and global studies programs.

The Texas Lutheran University Band will perform two concerts in the Dallas area during its upcoming 2009 Spring Tour.

Texas Lutheran University has named Dr. Edward Thompson III as its new executive vice president and provost, effective June 1.  In that position, Thompson will be the chief academic officer and second-ranking officer of the university, reporting directly to the president.   He replaces Dr. Mark Gilbertson, who has been serving as interim provost following the retirement of Dr. John Masterson last year.

The Texas Lutheran University Center for Women’s Studies is sponsoring several events throughout the months of March and April to promote awareness of women’s and minority issues.  All of the events are free and open to the public.

Texas Lutheran University professor John Nellermoe brings 50 years of work to his retirement exhibit that runs March 19-April 13.   “Celebrating Five Decades of Inspiration:  A John Nellermoe Retrospective” will be on exhibit in the Annetta Kraushaar Gallery located in the Schuech Fine Arts Center on the TLU campus.

The Texas Lutheran University Board of Regents recently announced several faculty members were promoted or granted tenure, based on the recommendations of the TLU Faculty Rank and Tenure Committee, the approval of the president, and a vote of approval by the TLU Board of Regents.

During the annual Texas Lutheran Board of Regents’ Honors Dinner Feb. 27, 38 TLU employees and retirees were recognized, including the recipients of this year’s Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty and Staff awards.

Texas Lutheran University has announced the selection of three new members of its Board of Regents.  New regents Verne Lundquist, Russ Rinn and Demetrius Hardeman, all alumni of the university, participated in their first regents meeting Feb. 27-28.

Dr. Mark Allan Powell, professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio and a 1975 Texas Lutheran University graduate, will present the 2009 Hein-Fry Lecture Series on April 24 at 1:30 p.m. in TLU’s Chapel of the Abiding Presence.

Texas Lutheran University has announced an innovative college scholarship program, TLU CHOICE, that gives students the opportunity of a private, liberal arts education for the same cost as attending Texas A&M University or The University of Texas. This announcement comes in response to increasing concerns that the college tuition cost of a private university is out of reach for most students.

Texas Lutheran University will honor one of its favorite professors on her 90th birthday, and it is inviting the community to be part of the celebration.  Dr. Evelyn Fiedler Streng, professor emeritus of science, will be honored by faculty and friends on March 6, 2-4 p.m., at the Fritz Homestead on the TLU campus.

Texas Lutheran University will officially dedicate its newest building – the AT&T Science Facility – in ceremonies on the TLU campus in Seguin at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27.

Texas Lutheran University President Ann M. Svennungsen has announced the appointment of Nancy J. Hershfield, CFRE, to the position of vice president for development and alumni relations for the 118-year old university.

The Center for Professional Development at Texas Lutheran University will offer for the first time a comprehensive 50-hour EKG Technician Certification Program.  Students will acquire the knowledge and skills to function as EKG technicians and to take the American Society of Phlebotomy Technician (ASPT) – Electrocardiograph (EKG) Technician exam in addition to other national certification exams. This course will include important practice and background information on anatomy and physiology of the heart, medical disease processes, medical terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, the Holter monitor, electrocardiography, and echocardiography.

The Synergy Brass Quintet, one of the most popular performing groups of classical musicians today, is returning to the Texas Lutheran University campus this month to perform alongside TLU’s wind ensemble and symphonic band. The concert, set for Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Jackson Auditorium, is free and open to the public.

Exploring local aquatic ecosystems, mastering the art of debate, viewing movies through a dramatic lens, and looking beyond the horizon through a telescope are just a few things to learn this summer at Texas Lutheran University’s Lone Star Scholar Academy.

Senior Rabbi Emeritus Dr. Samuel M. Stahl of Temple Beth-El in San Antonio will present his annual Jewish Chautauqua Society lectures at Texas Lutheran University on Feb. 18.  His major public lecture, “Seeing the Bible through Jewish Eyes,” will be given 12:50-1:30 p.m. in the Timmerman Room of Hein Dining Hall on the TLU campus.

Taxpayers in the Seguin and New Braunfels areas can get help with tax preparation, thanks to students at Texas Lutheran University and the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which offers free tax help to people who earn less than $42,000.

Texas Lutheran University student Bradley Walker received the Keith A. Russell Memorial Award for Academic Excellence on Thursday evening, Jan. 29, at a dinner on the University of Texas San Antonio campus.  Walker, a junior accounting major at TLU in Seguin, is a graduate of Blanco High School and is the son of Paul and Mary Walker of Blanco.

The United States Navy Band will be performing at Texas Lutheran University’s Jackson Auditorium on Tuesday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free, but required for the performance. Tickets will be available beginning Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Three well-respected regional philosophers will speak on the topic “One in a Million:  Finding the Individual’s Place in Community,” Feb. 11-12, during Texas Lutheran University’s annual Theology/Philosophy Symposium.  Each of the speakers will relate a selected historical philosopher to the general topic.

In commemoration of the international year of astronomy, Dr. Laurence A. Marschall, W.K.T. Sahm Professor of Physics at Gettysburg College, will present “Galileo’s New Universe,” Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. in Wupperman Little Theatre on the Texas Lutheran University campus in Seguin.

Texas Lutheran University recently received a $300,000 gift from alumna Carla Blumberg for its newest building.  The university will name the physics lab and classroom of its new AT&T Science Facility for Blumberg’s late father, Dr. Roland K. Blumberg who was a geophysicist, inventor, banker and 1940s wildcatter.

Texas Lutheran University invites Seguinites to submit stories and photographs of the city’s Hispanic community from the 1950s-1980s. The work is being collected by TLU professor Dr. Ana María González and her students in an upper division Spanish class.

In February Texas Lutheran University will celebrate Black History Month with a public lecture, Gospel Fest, and a number of events for students celebrating African-American history and heritage.

Celebrate! Act!  A Day On …Not a Day Off,” will feature a performance by soloist Melanie D. Wilkinson and will begin at 7 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 18, in TLU’s Jackson Auditorium. The program is free and open to the public.

Haiti native Marika brings her wooden sculpture exhibit, “Inspiration - Célébration -  Passion,” to Texas Lutheran University on Jan. 22, 2009. An opening reception will be 3:30-5:30 p.m., Jan. 22, in the Annetta Kraushaar Gallery located in the Schuech Fine Arts Center. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

Texas Lutheran University will host the 2nd Annual Children's and Youth Choir Festival for area choirs and their directors all day, Saturday, Jan. 17. Festival participants will perform in a final concert, which is free and open to the public, in Jackson Auditorium at 4 p.m. that day.
