Here at TLU, we believe in three guiding principles for all students in the mathematics degree program:
- To promote critical thinking and analytic problem-solving, not just in the mathematics classroom, but in everyday situations and events;
- To develop advanced mathematical aptitude and reasoning skills to prepare students for mathematics-based endeavors beyond the classroom; and
- To prepare students for success in all coursework by stressing the importance of reasoning and problem-solving.
Our mathematics program doesn’t just prepare you for success in mathematics; it prepares you for success in life. We strive to create a supportive environment where students work with faculty to gain confidence in technique and independent thinking.
Why Math at TLU?
Mathematics at Texas Lutheran University prepares students to think critically, solve complex problems, and adapt to a rapidly changing world. Through small classes and active-learning environments, students work closely with faculty who are committed to their success both inside and outside the classroom. Rather than being one of many faces in a large lecture hall, TLU mathematics students become part of a close-knit academic community where individualized attention and mentorship are central to the educational experience.
The TLU mathematics program combines rigorous mathematical training with modern computational tools such as Python, SageMath, and R. Students learn how mathematics can be applied to real-world problems while exploring its connections to the natural sciences and other STEM disciplines. Learning extends beyond the classroom through faculty-led research projects, conference presentations, and participation in Math Club, giving students opportunities to develop as scholars, collaborators, and communicators.
A mathematics degree from TLU opens doors to careers in actuarial science, analytics, statistics, education, and many other fields that value strong quantitative and problem-solving skills. The program also provides excellent preparation for graduate study by emphasizing mathematical rigor, independent thinking, and research experience. Whether students aspire to advanced academic work or careers in an increasingly data-driven economy, mathematics at TLU provides a powerful foundation for lifelong success.
