TLU Policies

TLU wants our graduates to achieve a breadth of knowledge in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences. Toward that end, students must meet requirements in nine areas called the Foundations and Distributions of Liberal Education. These areas are closely aligned with other schools’ “core” or “basics” courses.

Students can fulfill these dimensions with courses from multiple sources. Here are TLU’s general education requirements:

  • College Level Math Course (3 hours)
  • Introduction to Theology (THEO-133)
  • Any Modern Language (3 hours)
  • English Composition (COMP-131 & COMP-132)
  • Arts (Dramatic Media, Art, Music) (6 hours)
  • Humanities (Communications, English, History, Philosophy, Theology, Modern Languages, African-American Studies, Mexican-American Studies, Women’s Studies) (12 hours with no more than two classes in the same subject)
  • Natural Sciences & Math (Math, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Physics) (6 hours with 1 lab)
  • Social Sciences (Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology) (6 hours)

  • A maximum of 68 hours may be transferred from community colleges to Texas Lutheran University. Students with more than 68 community college hours will receive the most applicable to complete their degree plan as of the student’s first TLU semester. No changes may be made to the choice of transferred hours after the student starts classes at TLU.
  • Once the student attains junior classification, further transfer work from a junior college may be limited to 6-8 semester hours.
  • Only grades of “C-” or better will transfer. Grades of “D” do not transfer. Community college courses may not transfer into TLU as upper-division courses (300-400 level), even though TLU may have an upper-division course with exactly the same name and description. Community college courses may not be used to fulfill the 30-hour upper-division requirement for graduation at TLU. However, the course may be used as a substitute for an upper-division course with an approved substitution form signed by the chair and dean.
  • FREX134, Exploring the Arts & Sciences, is required of all students except transfer students entering with 24 or more hours, no more than 12 of which may be earned through dual participation and 12 months after high school graduation.
  • Only four hours of Physical Education (Kinesiology) activity will apply to degree requirements.
  • Only four hours of Ensemble Music will apply to degree requirements.
  • A minimum of 33 semester hours of work must be earned through Texas Lutheran University including the final 24 hours. Graduating seniors may, however, complete any remaining semester hours at a regionally accredited college or university on the following conditions: (1) They must have been in residence at Texas Lutheran University for a period of two semesters; and (2) They must apply for and receive approval for the work in advance from the appropriate department chair of the student’s major. All work attempted at other institutions must be reported to Texas Lutheran University with official transcripts in time to meet deadlines for graduation certification.

Students may apply a maximum of 30 semester hours of credit toward graduation through any one or combination of exams.

TLU students may earn credit by examination or receive credit through several programs, which include College Board Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) examinations taken while in high school; and College Level Examination (CLEP), Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), Defense Subject Standardized Tests (DSST), and Excelsior College (UExcel) examination programs during their time at TLU.

Credit by exam credit does not count toward residence hours, honors calculations, or affect a student’s grade point average. All credit by exam coursework appears on TLU transcripts as credit (CR).

Transfer Course Options

Transferable Texas community college courses are found in TLU’s Transfer Equivalency Guide. It lists the common course numbering, TLU course equivalent, and core competency (if any). Courses not on this guide might transfer on a case-by-case basis.

Courses with direct equivalency apply to TLU degree plans as if completed here. Courses with subject equivalency as electives might fulfill General Education, major requirements, or additional elective hours. Consult with your advisor before taking courses not found within this guide to ensure they transfer as your graduation requirement.

Texas Lutheran University awards credit for College Board Advanced Placement to all entering students who submit a score of three (3) or higher. These are high school courses taken by students before entering college with a culminating test at the end. For information, previous scores, or to schedule tests, go to www.ap.collegeboard.org. Texas Lutheran University informs students annually of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, as amended.

Students’ Rights Under FERPA

The right to inspect and review the student’s educational records within 45 days of the day the university receives a request for access.

Students should submit to Student Records, dean, head of the academic department, or other appropriate official, written requests that identify the record(s) they wish to inspect. The university official will make arrangements for access and notify the student of the time and place where the records may be inspected. If the records are not maintained by the university official to whom the request was submitted, that official shall advise the student of the correct official to whom the request should be addressed.

The right to request the amendment of the student’s educational records that the student believes are inaccurate or misleading.

Students may ask the university to amend a record that they believe is inaccurate or misleading. They should write the university official responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate or misleading. If the university decides not to amend the record as requested by the student, the university will notify the student of the decision and advise the student of his or her right to a hearing regarding the request for amendment. Additional information regarding the hearing procedures will be provided to the student when notified of the right to a hearing.

The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student’s education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.

One exception which permits disclosure without consent is disclosure to school officials with legitimate educational interests. A school official is a person employed by the university in an administrative, supervisory, academic or research, or support staff position (including law enforcement unit personnel and health staff); a person or company with whom the University has contracted (such as an attorney, auditor, or collection agent); a person serving on the Board of Trustees; or a student serving on an official committee, such as a disciplinary or grievance committee, or assisting another school official in performing his or her tasks. A school official has a legitimate educational interest if the official needs to review an educational record in order to fulfill his or her professional responsibility.

Texas Lutheran University considers work from other colleges and universities, the Defense Activity for Nontraditional Educational Support, and service school experiences when evaluating credentials.

Military personnel are invited to participate in academic programs to complete degree requirements as full-time students. Students may select from 30 majors and some programs can be completed in as little as one year based on previous work

TLU has been designated as an institutional member of Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges (SOC). This is a group of over 1,000 colleges and universities providing voluntary postsecondary education to military members worldwide.

SOC was developed jointly by educational representatives of each of the Armed Services, the Office of the Secretary of Defense and a consortium of 13 leading national higher education associations.

As a SOC member, Texas Lutheran University recognizes the military lifestyle’s unique nature and commits itself to easing relevant course credit transfer, providing flexible academic residency requirements, and crediting learning from appropriate military training.

The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.

This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree granting institutions) in the United States to voluntarily enter into an agreement with VA to fund tuition expenses exceeding the highest public in-state undergraduate tuition rate.

The institution can contribute up to 50 percent of those expenses and VA will match the same amount as the institution.

TLU is a participating institution in the Yellow Ribbon Program. For more information about the program and other benefits, visit the GI Bill website.

Students who plan to attend Texas Lutheran University while receiving any type of veterans education benefits should follow the steps outlined below:

Apply for admission, be accepted to TLU, register for classes, and submit a copy of your DD-214 (if you are a veteran) and a copy of the certificate of eligibility (CoE) issued by the VA to the registrar’s office.

  • Apply for financial assistance through the Office of Student Financial Services in addition to receiving veterans educational benefits.
  • Transfer students who have been applying veterans education benefits at another school should complete the Change of Program or Place of Training form.
  • Stay in contact with the school certifying official (SCO) in the registrar’s office and update the SCO of any schedule changes.

A partnership agreement with Texas State University (San Marcos) allows TLU students to cross-enroll at Texas State in either Army ROTC or Air Force ROTC. These ROTC programs commission qualified students who wish to serve in the United States military as officers.

ROTC courses offered by the Military Science Department (Army) or the Aerospace Studies Department (Air Force) at Texas State will be considered Texas Lutheran University courses. Credit for such courses will appear on the student’s TLU transcript equivalent to the credit hours offered by Texas State University. Each TLU student enrolled in Texas State’s ROTC program must meet eligibility requirements for admission to their program as stipulated in current Department of the Army and Air Force regulations.

ROTC students may compete for a variety of scholarships. Some scholarships provide full tuition, laboratory and incidental fees, and an allowance for books, plus a monthly stipend.

Students interested in the Army ROTC Program should email Mr. Jeffrey Coulter, Texas State University Recruiting and Enrollment Officer, or call 512-245-0390. Students interested in the Air Force ROTC Program should call 512-245-2182. Both programs hold classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
