About the Juror

Joe Garcia III is a self-taught artist originally from Lubbock, Texas. He has lived in Austin for the past 30 years. Garcia's work portrays scenes from life as viewed through the lens of his Texan/Mexican/American heritage. He uses his art to discuss the history of the Southwest, on a personal, regional, and national level.
As with many artists, Garcia grew up sketching familiar surroundings on a daily basis. In 2004, he decided to pursue his passion at the postsecondary level. _is advanced level of study lead to the development of his current style. Now, he strives to bring the colors and beauty of his multi-cultural heritage to the viewer.
His influence comes from a variety of cultures and subcultures. As he explains to his clients, "growing up Mexican American, you grow up with the best of both worlds. He adds, "in my world in the 70s and 80s, I could be watching Elvis Presley sing, gyrate, and do a lot of bad acting and on the same day watch Vicente Fernandez singing, whimpering, and yes more bad acting. But that's the life of a Mexican American, at least it is mine."
Looking through Joe's paintings, dating back to 2004, you will find how this artist evolved artistically from the days of painting as a hobby to the current days of not accepting anything less than being a working artist for the remainder of his days.
